About the course

The two MSc programmes in Biomedical Engineering draw on the wide experience of academic staff at Brunel's College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences, that ranges from the development of equipment and experiments for use in space, to research carried out in collaboration with hospitals, biomedical companies and research institutions.

A research degree provides the opportunity to investigate a topic in depth, and contribute new knowledge to your discipline. A PhD involves demonstrating through original research or other advanced scholarship the creation and interpretation of new knowledge, a systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body of knowledge at the forefront of an academic discipline or professional practice, the ability to conceptualise, design and implement a project for the general of new knowledge, applications or understanding at the forefront of the discipline. MPhil option
Research students are welcomed to Brunel as valued members of our thriving, research-intensive community. A research degree provides the opportunity to investigate a topic in depth, and contribute new knowledge to your discipline. An MPhil involves the exploration of a research topic and is typically studied over a shorter period of 1 year for a full-time student and 2 years for a part-time student. MPhil students are required to demonstrate a systematic understanding of knowledge and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights informed by the forefront of their discipline, field of study or professional practice.

Research profile
Environmental factors influence our health and wellbeing, as well as affect ecosystems and wildlife. An intimate understanding of such factors – chemical substances, for example, or changes in radiation or temperature – is urgently needed to better understand disease trends in humans and adverse effects on wildlife. Our research in the area of environment and health provides the foundations necessary to pinpoint preventable causes of ill-health and adversity and to underpin development of evidence-based primary prevention policies. A second important focus for our research is to understand the impacts of human civilisation on Earth's natural systems and the ecosystem services that support us. We are developing technologies and approaches to prevent and remedy pollution as well as to renew and restore degraded ecosystems.

The Environment and Health theme is one of the largest in the Institute of Environment, Health and Societies (IEHS); there are now more than 50 theme members whose research focuses on five areas:

From government, social networks and ecommerce sites to sensors, smart meters and mobile networks, data is being collected at an unprecedented speed and scale – creating an expanding job market for qualified data analysts.

The practical aspects of many of the modules will allow you to gain hands-on experience of several commercial SAS tools (e.g. SAS BASE, Enterprise Guide, Enterprise Miner and Visual Analytics). This experience is designed, in part, to develop skills in preparation for the SAS certification part of the programme.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Comprehend the key concepts and nuances of the disciplines that need to be synthesised for effective data science.

Our Military and International History degree examines war within the context of wider international history to give you specialist knowledge of war in history while educating you to be a historian. Our course analyses warfare inside and outside Europe (including the Middle East), covering the period from the Renaissance to the present but with an emphasis on the modern era. We teach you the subject of war in history over a broad span of time with a focus on land and naval war, while also giving you the opportunity to take specialist modules in particular wars and themes in military studies. The course also draws on the department's specialism in intelligence studies to examine the role that intelligence has played in warfare. Our course provides our students with the critical thinking and analytical skills of the historian.

Our course, one of the few military history programmes in the country, provides you with the opportunity to study military history within the broader setting of a vibrant, student-centred department with a long history of supporting its students, and this is reflected in the annual student satisfaction survey (the NSS) where history at Brunel is ranked (2016) fourth in the country.
