About the course

This MSc in Advanced Engineering Design is aimed at high calibre and ambitious engineering graduates who want to gain expertise in systematically developing complex, multidisciplinary engineering design.

You will learn how to design products requiring embedded intelligence and comprehensive engineering analysis and how to use six CAE software packages.

The programme is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. This provides a route to Chartered Engineer status in the UK, and professional recognition.

The modules have been developed to fulfil the industry’s need for an integrated course that offers:

About the course

Design at Brunel is all about realising fantastic ideas in the real world. Our Product Design Engineering BSc degree is for creative thinkers who are also comfortable with mathematics and who enjoy deeper analysis of functional and technical design challenges, principally focused on industrially-manufactured products. The course spans design and engineering, meaning you can develop products that both look good and work well.

There is a lot of project-based learning to test your skills and you’ll see the outcome of your design from concept to making the actual product. This means you’ll be able to build a great portfolio of your best-quality projects, academic and industry briefs, and case studies, during your studies.

You’ll have workshop training and will use industry-standard equipment and software to develop quality hands-on skills to become a maker. Independent access is available to modern facilities that include dedicated design studios, digital sketching, extensive prototyping workshops, and electronics and digital fabrication labs. The practical knowledge you gain is transferable to industry and provides a head start for your future career as a designer and design making in the modern world.

Our product design engineering course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) and can be studied full-time over three years, or four years with a placement year.

The placement year helps you to prepare for the world of work and you’ll have a year’s worth of invaluable professional experience when you graduate. Our students have worked in both small innovation start-ups and multinational organisations such as Dyson, Jaguar Land Rover, Philips, Procter & Gamble, and Reckitt Benckiser. Some take advantage of exchange programmes that can take them to universities in Europe and the USA.

The first two years contain a balanced blend of creative and technical subjects and mechanics and electronics are taught at a theoretical level. In your final year, you move on to more specialised areas and you’ll become familiar with computer aided design, engineering and manufacturing software, applying these methods and tools to design practice. Your major project is likely to include a functional prototype incorporating mechanics and/or electronics.

GCE A-level ABB, including at least Grade B in Design and Technology, Product Design, Art ,or Art and Design, and at least grade B Maths or Physics (General Studies not accepted).

  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma D*DD in an engineering subject including Distinctions in Further Mathematics for Technicians, and Further Mechanical Principles.
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma DD in a related subject with an A-Level at grade A in Maths or Physics.
  • BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma D in any subject with A-Levels grade AB in Design and Technology, Product Design, Art, or Art and Design, plus Maths or Physics.
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma 31 points, including 5 in Higher level Design and Technology, Product Design, Art, or Art and Design, and 5 in Higher Level Maths or Physics.
  • Access to Higher Education Diploma Complete and pass Access to Engineering course with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 30 credits must be at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit or higher. All Maths units must be Distinctions at level 3.

 

Five GCSEs at grade C or grade 4 and above are also required, to include Maths and English Language.

Aims

Engineering is at the core of a successful economy and the infrastructure it develops directly affects the wellbeing of its citizens and the environment. Skilled, qualified project managers have a key role in this vital work.

There are two main challenges facing the engineering and construction industry:

  • clients are increasingly requiring contractors to deliver projects using limited resources, at low cost, in short duration and to a high level of quality and safety
  • much existing infrastructure is under severe strain due to a legacy of inadequate maintenance and rapid population growth.

The course examines these commercial pressures and will provide opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • the principles of strategic planning and risk analysis in successful project and infrastructure management
  • the theoretical basis for the organisation of project infrastructure development and how management of budgets, human resources and supply chains can affect overall project success
